Where it helps
Problems this book can help with.
- 01 Documents that ramble without clear structure
- 02 Burying the lead and losing your audience
- 03 Complex ideas that confuse rather than clarify
- 04 Presentations that don't land with executives
- 05 Struggling to organize thoughts logically
Main ideas
What I took from it.
- 01 Start with the answer, then provide supporting arguments
- 02 Group ideas logically using MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive)
- 03 Structure arguments in pyramids with one idea at the top
- 04 Use the SCQ (Situation, Complication, Question) framework
- 05 Build stories that flow naturally from problem to solution
My review
Why I recommend it.
Barbara Minto developed the method at McKinsey. It teaches you to lead with the answer and arrange the supporting argument beneath it.
It takes practice, but I recommend it to product managers who regularly explain complex decisions to executives and stakeholders.
